Jack White was born John Anthony Gillis on 9th July 1975 into a musical, catholic family of 10 children in Detroit.

White was awarded a Nieman fellowship at Harvard University in 1976 and studied African Affairs and American ethnic politics for one year. After dropping out of college after a semester, Jack worked for several years as an upholsterer while playing drums or guitar in various Detroit bands.

The single, Seven Nation Army was a number one hit on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and won a Grammy Award for  Best Rock Song in 2004.
