We took the trip from Chama to Antonito. The conductor and service personnel are extremely friendly. The Cumbres and Toltec railroad is what chama is known for. On the leg from Osier to Antonito the first 2/3 of the trip had excellent scenery but the last 1/3 was just scrub sage land. Review tags are currently only available for English language reviews. The train climbs from northern New Mexico into the southern Rockies before winding it's way through many wonderful hills and deer meadows before travelling down to southern Colorado's plains which run into Antonito. We loved seeing the spot where the young Indiana Jones (River Phoenix) was filmed as he battled bad guys on a moving train.

We took trip #6 Friday, May 29th - Train ride from Chama to Osier for lunch and back to Chama on train. Actually a pretty smooth ride considering.Be sure to spend some of your time in the open air gondola. There were two seats available in Parlor Car and we splurged! He met the train at Osier and allowed photos. It really felt like we were in the old west. These late June temps were a bit on the cool side, especially at the top and I wasn't prepared with a jacket or sunglasses. Enjoy the elegant setting with extra room and individual seating for your comfort. There was adventure too since the was a rock slide that stopped the train for an hour. Apparently, being a million mile hogger is a big deal to these guys. this trip we stayed in chama, took the bus to antonito and the train back[all included in the ticket price. We rode on to Antonito but would recommend that unless you really enjoy train rides to just catch the train back to Chama.
It was nice to begin and end our trip inside. Chama is a wonderful get-away destination for hiking, boat excursions, fishing and horseback riding.
Amazing! You have choice of turkey dinner (turkey and gravy are gluten free, potatoes are not homemade), meatloaf or soup and salad bar. We took two friends (also steam railfans) as part of their first visit to the USA. What a thrill.
We started from Chama because there is a wealth of heritage stock and access is a photographer's dream! The scenery, the plant life, the history. We rode up from Chama. Sunscreen is also a must at this elevation.We only live about 3 hours away from Chama.
